The Department of Natural Resources Science (NRS) in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) at the University of Rhode Island (URI) invites applications for an academic year, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in wildlife population ecology. Appointment Spring/Fall 2024. URI is the State’s flagship land/sea/space grant research university located in Kingston, Rhode Island— a beautiful seaside community that is well connected by car and rail about 40 min from Providence, an hour from Boston and 3 hours from New York City. Southern Rhode Island is rural, with numerous wildlife refuges, state management areas and local land trusts where research can be conducted.
The Department of Natural Resource Science, College of the Environment and Life Sciences, and URI are committed to building and supporting a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community of students and scholars.
NRS has 18 full-time faculty members, over 300 undergraduates majoring in either Wildlife and Conservation Biology or Environmental Science and Management, and numerous graduate students majoring in either M.E.S.M (a non-thesis professional M.S. program), or thesis-based research in the Biological and Environmental Sciences for M.S. and Ph.D. students.
We invite individuals with a strong commitment to teaching, research, experiential learning and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will generate an internationally recognized program of research and scholarship investigating the population ecology of terrestrial vertebrates. The candidate is expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and experiential learning in the latest statistical approaches and technological advances to investigate the population dynamics of vertebrate populations.

BASIC FUNCTION

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, develop an externally funded research program, and support public engagement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establish a competitively funded research program.
Publish original research in peer-reviewed academic journals and other significant research outlets.
Teach one undergraduate course and one graduate-level course related to population ecology, and other courses that will enhance both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the Department of Natural Resources Science (NRS), College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS).
Provide advising, training, and research mentorship to undergraduates majoring in Wildlife and Conservation Biology and graduate students in the Biological and Environmental Sciences, which is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental degree program.
Engage in service activities and governance within the Department, College, University, and the wildlife profession.
Provide communication, outreach, and engagement with communities relevant to the population ecology of terrestrial vertebrates.
Demonstrate experience or potential to engage diverse students in all aspects of teaching, research, and service.
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printer, word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Required qualifications:

1. A Ph.D. or D.Phil. in ecology, wildlife management, conservation biology, forestry or other closely related fields (biological sciences, conservation science, natural resources science) at time of application.
2. Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement as shown by (a) publications related to wildlife population ecology in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, or books, and (b) presentations at scientific meetings.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop an independent research program as shown, for example, by research statement, lead authorship on peer-reviewed publications, presentation at national or international conferences, funded grants or award, or other research outputs.
4. Demonstrated ability to teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
5. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/organizations.
6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
7. Demonstrated proficiency in verbal communication skills.
8. Demonstrated commitment to participate in professional service and outreach as shown by participation in committees, organizations, or other activity.

Preferred qualifications
for this position (strongest consideration will be given to candidates who can demonstrate this additional expertise and experience):
1. Demonstrated expertise in using contemporary quantitative methods and technology to solve problems in population ecology of wild terrestrial vertebrates, particularly mammals or herpetofauna, inhabiting wetlands and/or forests.
2. At least one year of postdoctoral research experience at time of application.
3. Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary collaborations.
4. Demonstrated success obtaining funding through competitive grant programs (including graduate or postdoctoral fellowships and grants).
5. Demonstrated experience as the lead instructor of a wildlife population ecology course at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
6. Demonstrated evidence of successful mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
7. Demonstrated expertise making research findings accessible to a broad audience through outreach, social media, and other mixed media outlets.
8. Demonstrated ability to contribute to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
