Job Description

Postdoctoral Associate - Reed Lab

Postdoctoral Associate

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.  CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments and their communities both in New York state and around the world.

Position Function

The successful candidate will conduct comparative and experimental studies on gene regulatory networks underlying color pattern evolution in butterflies. The individual will use methods such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and ChIP-seq to identify genes and regulatory sequences that drive color pattern diversification, and experimentally assess candidate elements using CRISPR and transgenic approaches.

Anticipated Division of Time

Research (100%)  The Postdoctoral Associate will play a leading role in conducting experimental and comparative work to understand how changes in gene regulatory elements underlie butterfly wing pattern evolution. The incumbent will be expected to come to the position having some experience in both computational and bench approaches, and will be trained in molecular methods such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. The incumbent will work independently, but will also contribute to intellectual interactions within the lab, and potentially with collaborators in other labs. The incumbent will be expected to write and publish research articles to scientific journals and present their work at professional meetings and conferences.

This position formally begins as a one-year appointment and is renewable depending on funding and annual performance reviews.

Requirements

The applicant must have a PhD in a biological sciences discipline and experience in molecular genetic techniques including high throughput sequencing and data analysis. Strong familiarity with the evo-devo and gene regulation literature would be desirable, as would experience with CRISPR and transgenic methods.

Supervision Exercised
