Job Description Summary:
Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong communication skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.
The Thomas laboratory explores questions at the intersection of tumor microenvironment biology and experimental therapeutics. The position offers an exciting opportunity to discover fundamental mechanisms while using innovative approaches to further translational research on innovative ways to study the tumor microenvironment. Successful candidates will have a passion for research and learning, have a strong work ethic and communication skills, and enjoy working in a team environment. Mentorship will be provided towards grant writing, networking, management and individualized career development.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field. Proficiency in sterile tissue culture, molecular biology techniques, protein and nucleic acid determinations, handling murine models, analytical and computer skills.
  • Work Experience: Experiences that are desirable (but not required) include CRISPR, proteomics, next-gen sequencing (bulk or single cell genomics), or animal modeling.
  • Skills: The candidate should have a background in immunology or cancer biology and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects. A proven track record of publications and excellent written and oral communication skills are required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Publications in scientific journals or repute, small grant awards.


Job Duties Outlined:

  • Analyze and disseminate findings from basic and clinical research, including, but not limited to, analysis of data with advanced software, and developing and submitting manuscripts for publication.
  • Work collaboratively on multi-scholar research initiatives or lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger research project or program, under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher.

  • Design and implement research protocols, safety procedures, or instrumentation relative to research procedures.  Present finding through posters, seminars, and publications.
  • Supervise other personnel in the laboratory to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; participate in training of fellows, residents, students, and volunteer workers as needed.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
