Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division, Energy Technologies Area has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the team and work in the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems Department.

In this exciting role, you will focus on developing quantitative methods to analyze the electrification of off-road, non-road, and medium- and heavy-duty vehicle applications with innovative data-driven methods. You  should have a technical/quantitative background (engineering or economics), experience conducting data-driven analysis using machine/deep learning tools, simulation model development, and economic analysis. 

What You Will Do:

• Conduct research and coordinate the development of geospatial, econometric and simulation models for transportation applications, including various vocations of off-road, non-road (maritime, rail and aviation).

• Conduct data collection, cleaning, analysis and validation activities.

• Develop infrastructure planning and operation models to determine the type, quantity and locations of the infrastructure as well as how they can be operated, considering the electric grid constraints.

• Develop machine/deep learning approaches for geospatial data analysis, e.g., object detection, to support the granular simulation models within the HEVI-LOAD tool.

• Write and participate in the preparation of peer-reviewed journal papers.

• Work collaboratively with industry and academic partners involved in projects.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

• Participate in reporting to funders and present results to key stakeholders.

• Assist the project PI in developing research proposals.

What is Required:

• Ph.D. in engineering, science, or economics discipline with a strong quantitative focus.

• Ability to work independently and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues in a dynamic environment.

• Experience with handling large geospatial datasets and ensuring data quality.

• Proficiency with machine/deep learning models, e.g., Tensorflow, PyTorch, Keras, etc.

• Proficiency with at least one of the popular programming languages, e.g., Python, C/C++.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Must adhere to all Berkeley Lab and EH&S safety policies.

Desired Qualifications:

• Strong experience in conducting research in economic analysis.

• Hands-on experience with deploying machine/deep learning models over NVIDIA GPUs.

Notes:

• This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Postdoctoral Fellow appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.

• The monthly salary range for this position is $4,636.00 / mo - $7,103.00 / mo and is expected to start at $6,433.00 / mo or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
