JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, in Hershey, PA is offering a Post-doctoral scholar position with close collaboration with the Department of Public Health Sciences.

The position, immediately available, will focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in sepsis, using high dimensional and multi-faceted data. Our current focus is on leveraging electronic health record (EHR) data and immunologic data, among others, to drive innovation in healthcare. Our strategies are aligned with the College of Medicine (COM) strategic goals, including Biomedical Artificial Intelligence as well as Health System Sciences.

This position requires attention to detail and strong organizational and interpersonal as well as scientific writing skills. This position is scheduled to begin as soon as possible. Geographic proximity to Hershey Medical Center/Penn State College of Medicine is necessary for in-person activities (e.g. meetings/presentations); however, the position includes opportunities for hybrid work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD in statistics/ biostatics, public/population health, bioinformatics, computer science, or another appropriate field.
  • Familiar with R and one or more other programming languages, e.g., Python, Perl, C++, JAVA, or MATLAB.
  • Strong scientific writing skills, demonstrated by at least two first-author and at least 5 co-author publications.
  • The ability of independent learning and thinking in a highly dynamic and decentralized environment, as well as being a team player to contribute to many ongoing collaborative projects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the followings:

  • Research & Development:
    • Lead AI/ML projects aiming for top-tier publications.
    • Stay abreast of AI/ML advancements.
  • Data Management:
    • Source and preprocess large datasets.
    • Implement data augmentation techniques.
  • Model Development & Optimization:
    • Design, test, and optimize ML algorithms.
  • Collaboration & Mentoring:
    • Collaborate with academics in a multidisciplinary team setting involving clinicians and data scientists.
    • May guide junior researchers and students.
  • Documentation:
    • Maintain thorough records of methodologies and findings.
    • Update stakeholders on progress via reports and presentations.
  • Funding & Grants:
    • Assist in preparing research grant proposals.
    • Monitor relevant funding opportunities.
  • Code Maintenance:
    • Develop efficient code using libraries like TensorFlow and PyTorch.
    • Update and improve existing codebases.
  • Model Evaluation:
    • Design validation experiments for ML models.
    • Implement robust evaluation metrics.
  • Knowledge Sharing:
    • Present findings at conferences and contribute to research papers.
  • Continuous Learning:
    • Attend relevant workshops and courses.

Ethical & Infrastructure Management:

  • Adhere to research ethics, especially with human data.
  • Manage or liaise for computational resources.

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.
