Job Description

Postdoctoral Associate (Department of Microbiology); Ithaca, New York

Postdoctoral Associate

Department of Microbiology

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Cornell University

Ithaca, New York

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty, and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being. CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments, and their communities both in New York state and around the world.

Position Description:

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of John Helmann at Cornell University for a highly motivated candidate to study bacterial stress responses using Bacillus subtilis  as a model system.

The research project, funded by NIH, focuses on those stresses relevant to host-microbe interactions. Current projects address metal ion homeostasis, oxidative stress, and cell envelope stress responses in this important model organism. The postdoctoral researcher will have the ability to develop an independent research project in any of several areas relevant to this topic, and to explore multiple lines of research in parallel. Most projects employ a combination of classical bacterial genetics, forward genetics, ‘omics approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics), microscopy, bacterial physiology and/or biochemistry approaches to explore how Bacillus subtilis  adapts to its environment.

As the Postdoctoral Associate, you will design, execute, and interpret all experiments related to the project in collaboration with other lab members and collaborators. The Postdoctoral Associate is expected to become an expert in the relevant literature and contribute new ideas and insights to advance the project. They will prepare frequent progress reports and work collaboratively to prepare manuscripts for publication. Will participate in general lab management, help train graduate and undergraduate students, and assist other lab members when needed. Will present results at scientific conferences and through meetings with both internal and external collaborators and will be responsible for writing protocols for the laboratory procedures. The postdoctoral associate will seek out and attend educational seminars and training workshops relevant to the research, attend weekly lab meetings, and continuously maintain all required educational and position qualifications to fulfill job requirements.
