Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral associate position at the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL) of the University of Florida in Vero Beach, Florida. This one-year position is part of an award from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for a project entitled, “Non-target effects of novel attractive toxic sugar baits for control of insecticide resistant mosquitoes in Florida.”

Duties include:

  • Maintain lab colonies of domestic mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefaciastus.
  • Characterize the activity of novel attractive toxic sugar baits (ATSBs) to induce feeding and acute mortality among insecticide resistant and susceptible mosquitoes of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefaciatus.
  • Determine the activity of novel ATSBs to attract, induce feeding, and cause acute mortality in non- target insect pollinators.
  • Assist with data preparation and analyses, travel to scientific meetings to present results, and preparation of papers for publication.

Expectations:

  •  The appointment is for one year.
  • Expected salary: $50,000/year and fringe benefits. The position start date will begin in Summer/Fall of 2023.

Minimum Requirements:
  • An earned doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in a relevant field such as entomology, ecology, biology, toxicology, or related fields.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience or willingness to perform experiments in the field with mosquitoes and insect pollinators.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain records for experimental measurements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working with insects.
  • Background in use of insecticides or toxicology studies.
  • Knowledge of statistical analyses.
  • Experience with trapping and identifying mosquitoes and insect pollinators.
