Job Summary

 The Staff Scientist will study the ubiquitin-proteasome system and regulated protein degradation in the Varshavsky lab at Caltech

Essential Job Duties

  • Organize, plan, and conduct experiments to study the ubiquitin-proteasome system and regulate protein degradation.
  • Development (invention) of new biochemical and genetic methods to understand the mechanisms and specific functions of the ubiquitin system.
  • Applies scientific knowledge to solve complex practical and relevant scientific problems Organize, plan, and conduct experiments to study the ubiquitin-proteasome system and regulate protein degradation.
  • Development (invention) of new biochemical and genetic methods to understand the mechanisms and specific functions of the ubiquitin system.
  • Applies scientific knowledge to solve complex practical and relevant scientific problems that are directly related relevant to this research.
  • Identify and develop ways to improve the efficacy of experimental designs and of experiments themselves.
  • Co-authors study results and/or presents specific research findings at meetings, and conferences.
  • Contributes to organizing and writing of specific scientific results in the form of abstracts, journal articles, publications, presentations, etc.
  • Partners with Principal Investigator with initiating, writing and/or submitting scientific award proposals.
  • May provide guidance to students, postdoctoral scholars, and visitors regarding interpretation of research results.
  • May train other research or technical personnel on advanced techniques and methods.
  • May maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory equipment and/or instruments.
  • May periodically provide leadership and/or guidance to research personnel.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology with 8-10 years of relevant scientific research experience.
  • Thorough technical/scientific expertise.
  • Advanced research project experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology.
  • Ph.D. In biochemistry and genetics preferred.
