Job Description


The Senior Research Scientist position will involve structure-activity profiling of lipid-like heterocycles to inhibit the sphingosine-1-phosphate transporter Spns2 as well as mitochondrial uncouplers. Through an iterative process of synthesis and biological evaluation both in vitro and in vivo, drug-like compounds with once-a-day oral dosing are expected to be developed. The ideal candidate is expected to have (i) a Ph.D. in Chemistry, (ii) a record of publications, (iii) the ability to work independently with high self-motivation, and (iv) strong communication skills.

Responsibilities will include:
- Help faculty supervisor write grants
- Prepare regular written progress reports and present oral reports.
- Work with faculty supervisor and graduate students.
- Find solutions to scientific problems that arise in the research.
- Pursue research goals with limited consultation and little supervision.
- Supervise/train postdocs, undergraduate, and graduate students in laboratory procedures.
- Develop project research strategies, execution, and interpretation of research projects to gain
practical experience in the field.
- Prepare and present professional talks, reports, and publications.
- Engage in collaborative work with peers to achieve research objectives.
- Actively promote a culture of safety


Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in chemistry or closely related field(s) with significant (4 years) postdoctoral or comparable experience.
- Competent ability as a synthetic chemist with experience with methodology development as well as medicinal chemistry.
- Well skilled with purification and characterization of organic compounds, the latter using nuclear magnetic resonance, IR, mass spec, and chromatographic (HPLC/column chromatography) techniques.
- Ability to independently develop synthetic schemes and analyze data.
- Ability to define, organize, and carry out work with minimal supervision.
- Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with a research group.
- Strong communication skills.

- Knowledge in pharmacology parameters such as absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion.
- Evidence of developing publications based on research.
- Creativity, independence, and high motivation.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel in the organization.
