Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Nuclear Science Division Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the team.


In this role, you will work within the Applied Nuclear Physics program in the Nuclear Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The Postdoctoral Fellow is involved in conducting research towards the development, modeling, and characterization of a next-generation High Purity Germanium detector system primarily focused on nuclear structure experiments. Additionally, they will explore the efficacy of the technology for a wide range of other applications including nuclear security and biomedical imaging.


What You Will Do:

  • Fabricate semiconductor detector devices in a clean-room environment, following established protocols and quality standards.

  • Design, set up, and execute experiments to develop innovative processes and characterize detector performance.

  • Use simulations to model and predict detector behavior, contributing to the optimization of detector design.

  • Analyze experimental data using advanced statistical and data analysis techniques, and develop custom data analysis tools and algorithms as necessary.

  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Present results at collaboration meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences, and publish in refereed journals.

  • Collaborate with research colleagues and actively contribute to ongoing efforts in detector system development within the group.


What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics/Chemistry/Engineering or a related discipline obtained within the last three years.

  • Proficiency in assembling, servicing, or utilizing radiation detection systems.

  • In-depth knowledge of gamma-ray spectroscopy and particle detection techniques, including relevant instrumentation and data acquisition methodologies.

  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills, adaptability to new technologies and tools, and the ability to independently solve technical challenges.

  • Experience in data analysis and programming, with proficiency in Python preferred.

  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and collaborate effectively within a research group.

  • Track record of relevant publications and excellent written and oral presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to communicate scientific results effectively.

  • Salary: 

    The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000 - $6,257 and is expected to start at $5,954 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.


    Notes:

    • This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

    • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
