Job Summary

We seek a highly motivated and dependable individual to join the Van Valen lab as a Computational Research Technician. This individual will collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff to create annotated image datasets for deep-learning algorithms for cellular image analysis.   

Essential Job Duties

• Review and correct existing annotations of biological objects.  
• Extract relevant images and videos from scientific publications as instructed by staff.  
• Work with crowdsourcing companies to make clear and concise annotation instructions.  
• Provide feedback on data quality and software performance to develop annotation workflows.  
• Update and maintain image databases.
• Communicate efficiently with the manager, team members, researchers, and other support groups.  

Basic Qualifications

• B.S. degree.
• 2 years’ of relevant experience.
• Some college-level training in life sciences.
• Demonstrated proficiency with computers.
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks while paying close attention to detail.
• Ability to extract relevant metadata from scientific publications.  
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and in team settings.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with biological image annotation.  
• Experience in a team-oriented work environment.
• Experience in interpreting microscopy images to identify microstructures, staining patterns, and cellular boundaries.  
• Experience with scientific programming specifically Matlab, Python, or other programming languages.  
• Experience with version control software (i.e. git).
