Essential functions (job duties):

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, provide scientific and technical assistance to
complete laboratory based, clinical or population science research.  May assist in writing research protocols and in manuscript preparation.  Design and perform research protocols independently or as directed through training in more difficult or specialized procedures to meet the needs of the research protocol.

Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research.  Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates.  Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines.  Assist staff with experiments /research protocols as required.  Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.

Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data.  Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.

Prepare and present presentations regarding research results for professional, scientific and academic conferences.  Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals.  Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.

Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required.  Order and organize required research supplies and records.  Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.

Perform other related duties as assigned.


Unique duties:

The Molecular Reproductive Immunology Unit at C.S. Mott Center for Human Development at Wayne State University has an immediate opening at the level of Research Associate. The incumbent will work closely with a team of investigators on multiple projects that study mucosal immunity, with an emphasis on identifying mechanisms for HIV prevention and immune changes with aging. The Research Associate will be responsible for the implementation and analysis of major experimental projects essential to the laboratory's scientific research goals. Best candidate is a highly motivated individual with laboratory research experience and knowledge in data analysis and bioinformatics. This position requires attention to detail, especially in ensuring data quality and accuracy. The ability to work simultaneously on various tasks, and to effectively contribute to the project team are also essential. Essential Functions (Job Duties): 1. Collaborates with PI to develop long-range scientific plans for funded studies and coordinate personnel responsibilities. 2. Maintains existing databases and builds new databases, as needed, and maintains a valid and accurate data repository. Advises on the development of data collection and management systems. 3. Analyzes databases and perform statistical analyses and data visualizations. Specific Projects include: 1) Analysis of genomic data. 2) Image analysis for in situ sequencing of gene expression (ie. spatial transcriptomics). 3) Automated video analysis for life cell imaging (ie. Incucyte). 4) Analysis of microscope images for cell-cell interactions. 5) Analysis of flow cytometry data. 4. Learns and utilizes new software and analysis tools, as appropriate, to successfully complete work assignments. 5. Develops project and system documentation throughout the course of daily activities and projects. 6. Understands requirements involved in human subjects research and manage IRB protocols. 7. Actively participates in data generation and supports collaborative team culture. 6. Participates in training and supervision of students. 7. Assures maintenance of equipment and data storage. 8. Keeps reagents inventory and orders supplies. 7. Performs other management related duties as assigned and/or needed. 8. Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills 9. Assists in conducting literature reviews, developing grant proposals, and developing presentations and manuscripts for the dissemination of findings


Qualifications:

Education   Bachelor's degree
Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferred.    Requires advanced knowledge, predominantly intellectual in character, in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.  

Experience   Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)
Experience performing basic research techniques, preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work independently.  Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.  Microsoft office software skills.


Preferred qualifications:

Master's Degree in data science or data analysis and 2+ years of work experience in an academic and/or healthcare setting; clinical or basic research experience is a plus (which may include experience gained as an undergraduate). Programming experience in Python, and R is required, with preferred experience with relevant computational biology and bioinformatics packages. Ability to work with large data sets from multiple data sources. Background in biology and immunology and experience in either genomic analysis, image analysis, flow cytometry data analysis, data mining or machine learning is preferred. Knowledge of statistics, research methodologies, and software packages for database management and presentations. Ability to carefully document and maintain work in detailed written records. Prior managing experience is a plus.
