Art History Adjunct Instructor

 

Course: History of Entertainment Design – 3 Units

Laguna College of Art + Design invites applicants for an adjunct Art History Instructor beginning August 2023. The College is seeking a candidate who is willing to teach in person, on campus, as opposed to online or in hybrid formats. The successful candidate will also be someone who demonstrates an understanding of the unique qualities necessary to teach in a small, art college environment. The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California, and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Art, Illustration and Entertainment Design.

Course Description:

This course examines the evolution of entertainment as a human and cultural activity. It looks at all forms of human amusement and its various manifestations throughout history. It explores the multidisciplinary role of artists and designers in the making of entertainment productions from a historical and contemporary perspective. In additional to traditional entertainment venues that include theatrical stage, theme park and other physical local expressions, the course examines the evolution of entertainment technologies from the early days of film and television to the present. It seeks to provide perspective into the future trajectories of both traditional and technological processes involving entertainment, and those creatively involved in its making. The overall objective of this course is to help students gain understanding of Entertainment Design and its origins. Provides focus on themed environments and broadens ability to identify significant time periods, artists, and creations.

No Prerequisites. 3 units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide quality instruction according to the goals and objectives of the Entertainment Design department; conduct class sessions as scheduled
  • Prepare topic research, lectures, images, course and lab materials according to recent scholarship in the field
  • Create, prepare, and submit department-compliant syllabi, daily attendance records, midterm, and final grades according to set deadlines
  • Teach in person, on campus
  • Meet with students (either in-person or online) during weekly office hours as required and according to established guidelines
  • Create and facilitate an environment that encourages free and open classroom discussion of topics, issues, ideas, and interests
  • Adhere to LCAD’s diversity, equity and inclusion policies

Position Requirements, Experience and Education

  • A minimum of one year teaching experience at the post-secondary level (community college, 4-year college, or university)
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems, such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard, as well as prior use of Google email, Google Drive, Zoom, and/or similar communication/educational platforms
  • Knowledge and familiarity with image & research databases, smart podiums, projector use, iMac desktops, laptops, adapters
  • Strong communication skills, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize deadlines
  • Awareness of, sensitivity to, and an understanding of a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff
  • A commitment to supporting LCAD’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals

Minimum educational qualifications:

  • MA in art history, history of art and architecture, cultural history, or visual culture/visual studies required; PhD preferred; or
  • MFA in fine art with an emphasis or concentration in art history, along with demonstrated 2-3 year teaching experience in art history

Physical Essential Functions

  • Sitting, standing, and typing
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and moving from one place to another
  • This position takes place indoors in a classroom environment sitting at a desk, standing for long periods of time and occasionally working in front of a computer
  • Occasional bending, stooping, and squatting
