Job Description
In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Webster-Wood lab in Mechanical Engineering. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, subject area and may involve coordinating and implementing sophisticated research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. You will acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of your choosing. You will investigate the material properties of 3D printed elastomers and tune ink chemistry for biocompatibility and desired properties. You will understand the market needs to commercialize inks and generate IP and trade secrets for CMU partnered startup and such other tasks that are assigned to you.
Upon joining Carnegie Mellon University, Vickie Webster-Wood established the CMU Biohybrid and Organic Robotics Group (B.O.R.G). The B.O.R.G.’s research focuses on the use of organic materials as structures, actuators, sensors, and controllers toward the development of biohybrid and organic robots and biohybrid prosthetics.
Core responsibilities include:
Collecting and analyzing data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.
Conducting research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university.Material characterization
Maintaining 3D printers and ink precursors
Documenting all 3D printing and material studies, and publishing as appropriate
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
PhD Degree
Requirements:
Experience in Soft Robotics
Experience in 3D printing
Experience in SLA printing
Experience in Ink synthesis
Experience in Mechanical characterization under physiological conditions
Experience in Machine Learning
