Department Overview

The Department of Behavioral Neuroscience invites applications at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track) to work on the basic or translational aspects of understanding behavior and the causes, detection, and treatment of diseases.


Function/Duties of Position
  • Develop, prepare, and oversee competitive funding proposals.
  • Develop and manage a well-funded, independent, and vibrant research program.
  • Publish and present research findings.
  • Develop and foster strong collaborations with researchers within the department, university, and externally.
  • Supervise, mentor, and advise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research associates.
  • Serve on PhD dissertation and other academic committees.
  • Contribute to the teaching of graduate students.
  • Participate in faculty, department, and/or university governance and administrative activities.
  • Participate in professional development functions such as conferences, editorial boards, professional organizations, and study groups.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Chair in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service.

Areas of research focus:


Research areas of focus range from the study of molecular processes to the study of complex behavior. Emphasis is placed on understanding the independent and interacting roles of genes, molecular processes, neural circuits, and the environment in determining behavior, with the long-term goal of creating new knowledge that will aid in the prevention, detection and treatment of disorders and diseases of the nervous system impacting motivation, mood and cognition. Areas of excellence include research on the neurobiology of cognition, addiction, and other mental health disorders.


Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Appropriate postdoctoral experience.
  • Track record of independent publications and demonstrated potential for obtaining funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a high quality research program.
