Optical Systems Postdoctoral Fellow (Microscopy, Instrumentation, IR)

Job Description

Berkeley Lab’s  (LBNL ) Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division (MBIB ) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Polyzos Lab .

In this role, you will collaborate with the Advanced Light Source (ALS ) Division to develop fluorescence-detected photothermal infrared spectroscopy (F-PTIR) for imaging complex biological samples. This new technique enables infrared spectroscopic measurements at a higher spatial resolution than conventional IR microspectroscopy by detecting changes in visible fluorescence induced by infrared absorption. The project includes the development of an optimized instrument including multi-fluorescence excitation sources, broadband spectroscopic capabilities with ALS synchrotron infrared light and tunable lasers, as well as applied investigations of biological systems, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative disease progression. The F-PTIR instrument will be applied to the analysis of neural tissue to investigate the effects of the neurodegenerative disease Huntington’s Disease.

This position has an anticipated start date of October 1, 2023.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop an F-PTIR microscope optimized for biological samples.

  • Perform sample preparation, data acquisition and image processing on complex biological samples.

  • Measure and identify infrared markers for neurodegenerative disease progression.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers across Berkeley Lab in addition to external ALS users.

  • Participate in weekly group meetings and departmental seminars.

  • Publish original research in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Contribute to scientific publications.

  • Present research through talks and posters at conferences and workshops.

  • Uphold a culture of safety and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What is Required:

  • A recent Ph.D. (within the last 1-2 years) in Physics, Optics, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related Physical Sciences discipline.

  • Experience with lasers and alignment of optical systems.

  • Background in instrument development and experimental research with a track record of carrying out research projects from initiation to meaningful conclusion.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and willingness to learn new skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to efficiently organize technical information for publication and presentation.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with a diverse interdisciplinary research team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in material characterization with infrared spectroscopic methods.

  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy and other microscopy techniques.

  • Familiarity with image analysis code development and use.

  • Familiarity with measuring and analyzing biological samples.

  • Familiarity with the biology of the brain and neurodegenerative disease.

Notes:

  • For first consideration, please apply with a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume by September 4, 2023.

  • This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year (benefits eligible), Postdoctoral Fellow appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.

  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374-$6,444 and is expected to start at $5,374 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720.
