Professor and Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong invites applications for Professor and Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Ref.: 522409), to commence on March 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.  The appointment as Head of Department will be made for an initial three-year term, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

The Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering, one of the two founding faculties of The University of Hong Kong, is at the forefront of engineering research, and is one of the largest Faculties in The University offering a wide range of undergraduate majors, master’s programmes and PhD degrees.  The Faculty had groomed more than 20,000 professionals and industry leaders who are and have made their mark in Hong Kong and around the world.  The Faculty has over 160 professoriate and academic-related staff.

The Department

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has 45 core faculty members and serves over 400 undergraduate students, over 300 MSc students and 180 research postgraduate students.  The Department offers three undergraduate programmes, namely Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.  Minor and double degree programmes are also available.  At the graduate level, it offers master’s degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Energy Engineering.  In addition, the Department offers research-based postgraduate programmes at both MPhil and PhD level covering a wide range of topics.

Research activities in the department are broadly categorized into four main streams, namely biomedical engineering, electrical energy and control systems, intelligent systems, data and networks, and photonics and electronics.  The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities, and maintains over fifty laboratories grouped into the four main research streams and to be shared among department.

The Role

Reporting to the Dean of Engineering, the Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is expected to provide leadership and vision in leading and growing the Department’s research and educational missions and to lead a major expansion of the Department professoriate.

The Head should possess distinguished academic credentials, with internationally acclaimed research achievements.  He/She should preferably have relevant administrative experience. The successful candidate should also possess excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.

A wide-range of research funding opportunities exist both in Hong Kong and China (far exceeding most other countries) and through interactions with government and local, regional and international industry. The University is adding major new facilities throughout Hong Kong and nearby in China.  A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The University will contribute up to 15% of basic salary into the retirement benefits scheme. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
