The Smidt Heart Institute is comprised of 16 centers and programs to diagnose and treat an array of heart conditions in all types of patients. Led by Dr. Eduardo Marban, the center provides expertise in specialties including transplantation, stem cell therapy, congenital heart disease, women's heart health, valve disorders, arrhythmia, and hypertension. Not only is the Heart Institute committed to caring for patients they are committed to conducting cutting edge research. Due to the extensive research being conducted right here at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute patients have access to pioneering research techniques.
Role Summary & Objectives

The lab of Dr. Eduardo Marbán is located in plaza level of the Davis Research Building. His lab is housed within a multi-PI cardioregenerative medicine lab group occupying 3,600 sq ft of dedicated bench space, as well as two additional rooms totaling 1,155 sq ft with 6 dedicated tissue hoods and associated incubators. There are 10 dedicated benches within this suite, and access to all shared facilities, including a small animal microsurgical suite with dedicated expert technical support. This internship will provide the research environment for a college student to perform in vitro studies and immunohistochemical analyses on mouse and rat samples. It will support two ongoing projects examining the distribution and mechanism of action of cell-secreted products (exosomes) in cell culture and in vivo. The student will gain extensive experience in basic laboratory techniques including: western blot, cell culture, and immunopathology.
The student will have the opportunity to learn from postdocs, project scientists and research associates on an every day basis and will be meeting with Dr. Marban 1-2 times a week to discuss progress. The student will also attending weekly lab meetings, journal clubs and departmental research meetings.

Required Education & Experience 
•    Must be 18 years of age or older.
•    Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
•    Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
•    INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship.
•    VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
