High Precision Patterning Science Postdoctoral Scholar

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a High Precision Patterning Science Postdoc to join the team.

Berkeley Lab is leading a new Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC)—Center for High Precision Patterning Science (CHiPPS)— that brings together a cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to advance precision patterning science for next-generation semiconductor, spintronic, and quantum devices. You will lead the multimodal characterization with synchrotron X-rays and electron probes of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV)-driven chemical reaction, diffusion, solvation at nanoscale interfaces that will aid fundamental understanding and control of patterning materials and processes. These activities will be supported and enriched by other researchers in the EFRC, whose efforts encompass advanced materials synthesis, theory and modeling.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide technical expertise and oversee and manage synchrotron characterization efforts within collaborative projects.
  • Provide leadership in developing metrology tools leveraging electron, EUV and soft/tender x-ray probes to study pattern generation in photoresists upon exposure to EUV radiation.
  • Elucidate structure–property relationships governing pattern generation.
  • Leverage the unique facilities at LBNL, including the Advanced Light Source, Center for X-ray Optics and the Molecular Foundry, conduct original research to develop chemistry-morphology-function relationships in new EUV resist materials.
  • Build collaborations and work in teams of EFRC scientists from diverse backgrounds and play a key role in merging efforts that span synthesis, characterization, theory, and macroscale properties.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to scientific research papers, reports, review articles; present oral reports.
  • Uphold a culture of safety and promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability (IDEA) practices.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in physics, materials science, chemical engineering, polymer science, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience and expertise in x-ray characterization in spectroscopy, microscopy, and scattering.
  • Experience and expertise in determining structure-property relationships in complex materials, like polymers or other hybrid material systems.
  • Experience or expertise in light–matter and electron–matter interactions, e.g., photochemistry or ionizing radiation.
  • Experience or expertise in scientific data analysis and programming.
  • Experience or expertise in solution-phase processing and structural characterization of thin films.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and eloquently represent and promote scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Strong publication record with experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports and research posters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to guide and train junior researchers.

  • This is a full-time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000.00 - $5,996.00. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
