Job Description:

The Clinical Instructor for the respiratory care program must have active credentials through the (NBRC) National Board of Respiratory Care as a registered respiratory therapist (RRT) and is supervised by the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education and/or Department Chair of the Respiratory Care Program. The incumbent will have an overall responsibility for supervising Respiratory Care students in the clinical setting.

Specific job responsibilities include but not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Demonstrates and teaches patient care in clinical units to respiratory students and instructs students in principals and application of physical, biological, and psychological subjects related to respiratory care.
  • Will be required to take up to but no more than five students.
  • The Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education is responsible to schedule and facilitate student rotations to specialized units: PEDI, NICU, REHAB, PFT, as it correlates with the curriculum.
  • The Clinical Instructor is responsible to direct and assist the student to any specialized units within the hospital when they are rotated.
  • Supervises respiratory students while performing patient care.
  • Exhibit a positive professional attitude toward students and the teaching process.
  • Utilize positive interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates competency in instructional and evaluation methods.
  • Provides a positive role model for students.
  • Maintain records of student's clinical experiences and performance as prescribed by the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with program policy.
  • Participates in planning daily clinical curriculum.
  • Cooperates with medical and nursing personnel in evaluating and improving teaching and respiratory practices.
  • Serves as a liaison between the college and the clinical site.
  • Instructs and guides respiratory students in specialized respiratory activities, such as therapy of medical, surgical and/or pediatric patients and those with chronic illnesses.
  • Report any and all issues and concerns related to student progress to the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education as soon as possible.
  • Is responsible for evaluating and documenting student's clinical competency for each clinical procedure as outlined in the clinical lab book each semester.
  • Evaluate student progress weekly through verbal feedback and written weekly performance evaluations.
  • The instructor will work within the respiratory care program, under the supervision of the Academic Clinical Coordinator, with a dotted line report to the Dean of the School of Health and Department Chair.
  • The instructor must demonstrate the ability to respond to and work with diverse and varied student populations and support the mission of the College.

Job Requirements:
  • Minimum Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy from a CoARC accredited institution.
  • Must have current critical care experience, 3 years minimum.
  • Must have current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
  • Must be a current member of AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care).
  • Must be current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Preferred current (ACLS) Adult Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Must have current Connecticut Respiratory Care Professional (RCP) license.
  • Minimum one (1) year of work experience in a level one trauma center.
  • All candidates should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Applicants must have a flexible schedule, including ability to work evenings and weekends.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties normally performed in a classroom/lab environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to bend, stoop, sit, climb, walk and reach overhead as needed.
