Research Associate in Physics

Job Description

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia is seeking a postdoctoral research associate in experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physics to work with Prof. Bob Jones exploring electron dynamics in molecules on femto- and atto-second time-scales.

Highly motivated candidates with interests in ultrafast molecular dynamics and experience with short-pulse and high-intensity lasers, including high harmonic and attosecond pulse generation, are especially encouraged to apply. This position is supported by a multi-institutional collaborative grant from the Department of Energy. The candidate's research will be conducted at the University of Virginia, in collaboration with experimental and theoretical research groups at the Ohio State University and Louisiana State University, respectively.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have completed the requirements for a PhD in experimental atomic, molecular or optical physics (or a closely related field relevant to the project), prior to the appointment start date. Priority will be given to candidates with experimental expertise in the interactions of intense, ultra-short laser pulses with molecules. The position requires strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. The candidate is expected to play a prominent role in the design and performance of experiments and associated data analysis, the dissemination of results through peer reviewed publications and oral presentations at professional conferences and meetings, and serve as a mentor for both graduate and undergraduate students in the group.
