Description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Department: Pediatrics, Section of Developmental Biology

Job Title: Research Instructor

Position #:00812544 – Requisition #:30768

Job Summary:

We seek a highly motivated individual to serve as a light microscopy specialist for the Section of Developmental Biology. Light microscopy and image analysis are fundamental techniques in developmental biology, and the Section operates numerous widefield and confocal microscopes to support its research. The successful applicant will maintain these microscopes, train Section members to use microscopy techniques and sophisticated imaging software, identify and evaluate new microscopy systems for purchase, and help prepare image-based data for grant proposals and manuscripts.

The Section of Developmental Biology has more than 10 laboratory groups, consisting of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research staff. Section members investigate a wide range of problems in developmental biology across different cells, tissues, and organs using animal and cell models. Quantitative analysis of imaging data plays a large role in our research, and the microscopy specialist will ensure that Section members use the most up-to-date and cutting edge approaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain stereomicroscopes, widefield microscopes, and confocal microscopes
  • Provide training to individuals in light microscopy, data collection, data analysis techniques, and figure preparation and presentation techniques
  • Promote best practices for microscopy data storage
  • Develop and teach workshops and short courses to promote light microscopy competency within the Section
  • Provide experimental design and analytical support for light microscopy approaches
  • Evaluate microscopy hardware and software for purchase
  • Collaborate with faculty to obtain external funding and publish high-impact manuscripts·

Why Join Us:

The Section of Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado is committed to research that improves child health. Specifically, we have five main objectives:

  • Understand the genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms that guide normal development
  • Determine how normal developmental processes are altered to result in developmental disease and disability
  • Identify new diagnostic strategies and molecular and cellular therapies targeted at treatment of childhood disease
  • Train the next generation of leaders in developmental and stem cell biology and pediatric disease research
  • Serve as a hub for basic and translational child health research that spans the Anschutz Medical Campus research community

To accomplish these objectives the faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and research staff who comprise the Section of Developmental Biology perform research using stem cell, organoid and animal experimental models, including Drosophila, zebrafish and mice. Our investigations focus on several major tissue and organ systems such as the brain, heart, intestine, face and vascular, olfactory and immune systems. Our work is leading to a better understanding of childhood disabilities associated with neuropsychiatric disease, Down syndrome, the congenital basis of cardiovascular and facial malformations and the impact of maternal health on fetal development.
