About us

The Chesterbrook Community Foundation (CCF) empowers the children and teens who live in the Chesterbrook Gardens and Dana Court public housing communities in Waltham, Massachusetts by providing them with mentoring, academic support, and enrichment in structured after-school and evening programs.

Job Title: Assistant Director

Organization: Chesterbrook Community Foundation (Chesterbrook Learning Center)

Job Type: Part-Time

Commitment: 15 hours per week

Compensation: $29 per hour

The Chesterbrook Learning Center is a free after-school youth development center that provides school-aged children living in a low-income housing development mentoring and academic enrichment opportunities. The center is supported by the Waltham Housing Authority, the Waltham Police Department, and Bentley University Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center. The Program Directors, Bentley University students help children enrich their lives through academic, technological, artistic, recreational, and social experiences. The children have access to computers, the Internet, a printer, and a well-stocked library. Bentley University students mentor and motivate the children to succeed academically and socially. The children participate in homework-help sessions and recreation time at the centers.

The Chesterbrook Learning Center is located in Waltham, MA. The center is open from September to June each year, and houses after school programs for the youth of the Chesterbrook Gardens low-income housing development and and consists of 100 multi-ethnic families, including ~40 children. The center is managed by the Program Director who the Assistant Director will support, in strong partnership with Bentley University, the City of Waltham, and the Chesterbrook Board of Directors.

Responsibilities of the Director

The responsibilities of the Director will generally include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage and provide oversight for an after school program along with the Director at the Chesterbrook Learning Center which operates from 2:30-5:30 each Monday-Friday From September-December and then January - May.
  • Collaborate with Bentley University student leaders in running effective educational, social, and recreational programs.
  • Work with key stakeholders from Bentley University and the City of Waltham in creating collaborative programs.
  • Represent the Learning Center positively in all communications and interactions.
  • Partner with the Chesterbrook/Prospect Hill Board of Directors for ongoing programming needs, special events, opportunities for enrichment, etc.
  • Work with the Chesterbrook Garden’s or Prospect Hill’s Tenants Association and other key stakeholders to provide consistent programming, understand the needs of the community and host joint events
  • Engage parents/guardians of the Chesterbrook Gardens neighborhoods as part of student academic success and ongoing program enrichment
  • Create and enhance opportunities for participatory, collaborative, and meaningful community engagement

Qualified Candidates

  • Bachelors degree (Masters or equivalent preferred) in social sciences, education, social work, community development or related fields.
  • 2+ years of experience working with school-aged youth, college students, and diverse communities
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong writing and verbal skills
  • Experience with youth education and curriculum development
  • Availability from 2:00-5:30 on Monday to Friday
  • Must be a self-starter, reliable, results oriented, and possess excellent management and supervisory skills.
  • Driver’s license and access to an automobile
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole (reading and writing) a plus
