POSITION OBJECTIVE

Singh lab focuses on understand the flow behavior of dense particulate matter.

The broad topics of research will be "modeling and simulation of colloidal suspensions, polymers, and grains", with a possible focus on:

  • Simulating suspensions with non-Newtonian liquid phases
  • Simulating polydisperse particles (in terms of size and shape)
  • Using network theory in dense Suspensions
  • Combining network theory, Machine learning, and dense suspension rheology.

Prior experience in modeling and simulation of particle flow including but not restricted to DEM, SPH, DPD, SD, LBM, MD methods, etc. is a bonus, but not a requirement.

The Researcher will keep the PI informed of progress of research projects. The Researcher will also present data and findings at lab and scientific meetings, seminars, etc., prepare manuscripts, and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan and execute simulations for research projects designed by the principal investigator and may design simulations independently and in collaboration with the PI. Assist with and coordinate research performed by other lab members, ensuring adequate usage of computational resources. 50%
  • Assist the PI to develop new proposals and ideas. 10%
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students; oversee their research and ensuring successful completion of their milestones. 10%
  • Present the new results and research at group meetings, seminars, conferences etc. Ensuring preparation of manuscripts. 10%
  • May establish collaborations outside of the department (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc.) and worldwide. 10%
  • Operate the workstation, but also make sure proper usage of HPC resources and advice students on the same. 10%

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

CONTACTS

Department: Weekly contact with PI and lab members, may also work with other faculty for collaboration of research projects, contact with administrative staff as needed/desired.

University: Regular/Occasional contact with other labs for collaboration. Examples may include other departments such as Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering within the Case School of Engineering.

External: High Performance Cluster representatives, funding agencies, industries as needed.

Students: Undergraduate, graduate (and/or) high school students working in the lab.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No direct supervisory responsibilities. Will train and provide oversight to lab staff and students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: No minimum of related postdoctoral experience required.

Education/Licensing: PhD degree in Physics/Chemical Engineering/Polymer Science and Engineering / Materials Science.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Numerical and computational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals within and external to the University.
  • Strong organizational skills; multi-tasking skills; time-management.
  • Ability to work independently and in team.
  • Excellent at presenting data at not only laboratory meetings but also seminars, conferences, etc.
  • Supervision Skills: May supervise/mentor younger students.
  • Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate innovation and creativity, sound judgment, and good decision-making.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primary work in labs in KHS building.
