Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications:
PhD, MD, or MD/PhD. One year of full-time equivalent research experience; doctorate-level degree in a field relevant to human brain imaging, such as Psychology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Psychiatry, Radiology, or Neurology.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior research experience with human brain imaging, including fMRI and/or PET.  Prior research and/or clinical experience with human drug addiction patients.  Demonstrated proficiency, or at least a strong interest and potential, in programming and coding.  At least 2 peer-reviewed publications as first or senior author.  Experience with aggregating/exporting data from research databases such as REDCap.  Familiarity with statistics and data analysis software, such as SPSS, R, or Stata.  Experience with research administration and regulation, such as working with IRBs and the FDA.

Brief Description of Duties:
We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our lab studying brain structure and function, and their relationships to behavior, cognition, and clinical outcomes, in human drug addiction. We are an embedded lab inside the Multi-Modal Translational Imaging Lab , a large, multi-disciplinary, multi-PI laboratory using PET, fMRI, MRS, rTMS, novel psychoactive compounds (clinical trials), and more to study both schizophrenia-spectrum and substance use disorders.

The Postdoctoral Fellow primarily will be responsible for aggregating and analyzing already-collected multimodal behavioral and brain imaging data, and writing up results for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, self-starting, curious, and collaborative. We value creativity to develop brand new, rigorous paradigms and tasks for testing key psychological and clinically relevant hypotheses. Computational and/or programming skill sets also will be highly valued. Clinical experience/licensure will be viewed favorably, but is not a prerequisite for the position. The Postdoctoral Associate should have excellent communication skills (demonstrated command in both speaking and writing English). The appointment is expected to last 2-3 years, but could be extended pending sufficient funding and mutual interest. Current projects the Fellow may work on include:

Metacognition (“thinking about thinking”) and its circuitry studied with fMRI in opioid use disorder (OUD).

Clinical insight (self-awareness of a disorder and need for treatment) and its circuitry studied with fMRI in OUD.

Stress biology studied with fMRI, behavioral, and salivary measurements in OUD.

Clinical outcome prediction using multimodal behavioral, lab-based, and fMRI measurements in OUD.

PET measurement of the vesicular cholinergic transporter and its associations with cigarette dependence in smokers Long Island's premier academic medical center, Stony Brook Medicine, represents Stony Brook University's entire medical enterprise and integrates all of Stony Brook's health-related initiatives:  education, research and patient care.  It encompasses Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children's Hospital, the five Health Sciences schools -- Dental Medicine, Health Technology and Management, Medicine, Nursing and Social Welfare -- as well as the major centers and institutes, programs and more than 50 community-based healthcare settings throughout Suffolk County. Stony Brook Medicine is part of the larger Stony Brook University community, now designated as a flagship university of the State of NY.

Develop and perform data processing and statistical analyses.

Write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and develop posters/presentations for scientific conferences and other forums.

Manage research assistant volunteers and other staff as needed.

Aggregate and collate data for analysis, funding agency reporting requirements, and other necessary functions.

     Other duties as assigned.
