­­­­­The Department of Biology at the University of Iowa, in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of neurobiology, beginning in the academic year 2024. We welcome applications from candidates using a variety of approaches and techniques.

Candidates must hold a PhD and have postdoctoral training (or the equivalent). Successful candidates will have an established record of research in high-quality journals and show strong promise of an externally-funded program of research and of productive research interactions with current faculty members in neurobiology and related areas. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the instructional mission of the Department of Biology, including the undergraduate Neuroscience major, by teaching courses and mentoring students, as well as by fostering a climate of inclusiveness.

The Department of Biology is housed in two connected buildings, located in the heart of Iowa City. The Department is home to a diverse group of faculty including neurobiologists, as well as cell and developmental biologists, geneticists, and evolutionary biologists. Our faculty are well-integrated within the larger neuroscience community on campus, which is experiencing unprecedented growth in financial support for faculty and research infrastructure with 140 neuroscientists across five colleges and 26 departments, and the recently established Iowa Neuroscience Institute. This environment offers extensive opportunities and support for vibrant interdepartmental collaboration with researchers across our campus. The Institute supports core facilities including the Neural Circuits and Behavior Core and the Iowa NeuroBank Core.

The Department is home to the Carver Center for Genomics, offering in-house DNA sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, and other services, and the Carver Center for Imaging, which houses a multiphoton microscope as well as other confocal and epifluorescence systems. Additional state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Iowa, include MRI, microscopy, and high-throughput genetic analysis facilities. The Department has both PhD and MS programs, and faculty also recruit PhD students from the NIH T32 Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience, as well as other interdisciplinary graduate programs.
