Position Focus:

Reporting to the Director for Professionalism and Leadership Development in the School of Medicine ‘s Office of Academic and Professional Development (OAPD), the Senior Associate Director is responsible for assessing and resolving professionalism, behavior, conduct and culture/climate concerns involving faculty at the Yale School of Medicine, (YSM) developing and overseeing timely and effective interventions to address the concerns and prevent recurrence and providing a wide-range of leadership development support to YSM faculty. Oversight of the Professionalism Recognition Program: Conceive OAPD’s professionalism recognition program, including but not limited to, processes and promotion of the program which highlights and recognizes positive faculty professionalism. Engages with OAPD administrative staff and the communications officer to build general awareness about the program and recognize positive professionalism to recognized individuals and throughout YSM. Case Management/Investigation: Independently triage issues, assess jurisdictional boundaries, and appropriate review and intervention pathways for matters raised with OAPD. Facilitate coordination of matters across and between appropriate YSM and University offices, Yale Medicine, and Yale New Haven Health (“YNHH”) including but not limited to, the Office of the Provost, Title IX, the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility, the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of Graduate Medical Education, the Office of Medical Education, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and YSM’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Assess individual professionalism or behavior concerns, and departmental or section-level professionalism and climate concerns throughout YSM. Independently conduct climate/culture assessments, inquiries, focused reviews, and complex investigations of highly confidential matters involving faculty and independently compose comprehensive, written reports of findings and recommendations. Verbally present in organized, meaningful, and effective manner, findings and recommendations to faculty and administrative leaders at the YSM and the University. Write clear and comprehensive reports that document the methodology, findings, and recommendations and that can be disseminated to senior leaders in YSM and the University. Partner with YSM faculty leaders to develop and implement customized interventions that are timely, proportional, and effective. Oversee the implementation of appropriate, customized resolutions, including remediation interventions, corrective actions, and other appropriate supports in connection with YSM faculty behaviors of concern. Assist in formulating and operationalizing best practices for professionalism case handling and case management, including investigative procedures, monitoring case-handling activities, and recommending appropriate changes to procedures and ensuring compliance with governing policies and procedures. Leadership Development: Engage in OAPD’s efforts to design and operationalize YSM initiatives and institutional approaches to promote and develop the professionalism and leadership competencies and capability of YSM faculty, including, but not limited to, program conception, design, and delivery. Engage directly and independently with YSM faculty to provide individualized leadership development support to address their professionalism or leadership challenges or promote leadership competency development. Representative of OAPD Represent OAPD through formal and informal presentations to the YSM and University communities and higher education and academic medicine organizations. Serve as liaison and representative to university and external committees and professional associations. Advocate for the work, interests, and priorities of OAPD through service on YSM and University committees. Other: May perform other duties as assigned.


Essential Duties

1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies. 7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and eight years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

J.D. or PhD. Experience conducting fact-finding, investigations, or climate reviews. Experience in higher education, academic medicine, or health care Experience interacting with and influencing faculty. Experience in leadership development facilitation/training.
