Job Description

Research Assistant Professor in Molecular Pathology of Cerebral Small Vessel Diseases, Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia, and Alzheimer's Disease.

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, laboratory of Dr. Scott Earley is seeking a highly motivated individual for a Research Assistant Professorship funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position is a non-tenure track position.

The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing studies focused on understanding the molecular basis of cerebral small vessel diseases (cSVDs), Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID), and cerebral vascular dysfunction associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). VCID is the second leading cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease, accounting for approximately 15-30% of all dementia cases. cSVDs are a group of pathologies affecting the brain's microcirculation, responsible for up to 20% of all strokes and serving as the primary underlying pathology of VCID. Furthermore, the majority of AD patients exhibit brain vascular pathology consistent with cSVDs and VCID. However, the vascular mechanisms underlying cSVDs and AD remain incompletely understood, creating a significant obstacle in developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. Our laboratory aims to address this critical knowledge gap.

The successful candidate will join a team of experts and contribute to the development and characterization of multiple novel genetic models of cSVDs and VCID, utilizing unique genetic resources and a range of advanced techniques. These techniques include vascular pressure myography, patch-clamp electrophysiology, high-resolution Ca2+ imaging, superresolution microscopy, specialized magnetic resonance imaging modalities, and learning and memory behavior assays. The ultimate objective is to create genetic models that faithfully replicate key features of human cSVDs and VCID and use these model to investigate novel therapies.

Successful candidates will be responsible for conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, managing projects, training and supervising undergraduate and graduate students, publishing papers, and assisting with grant preparation and submission.

We are dedicated to the career development of our team members. Individuals who join our group will receive extensive mentoring, have opportunities to acquire new skills, and will be encouraged to pursue independent grant applications.

3) Three professional references (include name, title, company/organization, email address, phone number)

4) One-page personal diversity statement: Fostering a diverse and inclusive environment is one of the core missions of UNR Med.
