Research Assistant

Job Description


Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Materials Science (MSD ) Division has an opening for a Research Assistant to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will facilitate the investigation of nanoparticle assembly at the liquid-liquid interface as part of a collaborative team of chemists and materials scientists funded by the Department of Energy in the Adaptive Interfacial Assemblies towards Structuring Liquids core program. With oversight from the supervisor, you will be responsible for supporting the postdoctoral researchers by setting up and performing experiments and assisting in data collection, organization, and interpretation. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Keep labspace well stocked and orderly.

  • Set up and perform experiments using the tensiometer, optical microscope, atomic force microscope and rheometer.

  • Assist data collection, organization and interpretation.

  • Contribute to scientific discussions at group meetings.

 

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Contribute to the writing of manuscripts and proposals.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, nanoengineering or related field and/or equivalent experience, and up to two years of relevant experience.

  • Desire to facilitate outstanding science.

  • Excellent organization skills and self-motivation.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using common chemical laboratory tools and equipment.

  • Experience preparing solutions and equipment for chemistry experiments.

  • Experience doing academic or industrial research.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 1 year appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. 

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position is expected to pay $21.20 -  $23.60/hour, which fits within the full salary range of $21.20 -  $30.83  for the Research Assistant. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • This position will be performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
