Job Description

Responsibilities:

Characterize soil and water microorganisms using culture- and molecular-based techniques. Analyze data and prepare reports and manuscripts for funding agencies and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Coordinate activities with cooperating agencies and laboratories. Travel to and from field sites to collect samples. May periodically require overnight travel. May require work outside of normal business hours (i.e., nights and weekends) in order to process samples within required holding-times. Assist with writing proposals for grants and pursuit of contract funding opportunities to support the program. Assist with training of undergraduate and graduate students and staff members on lab and safety procedures. Assist with supervision of other laboratory personnel for research projects and teaching activities. Assist with accreditation and safety activities necessary to maintain laboratory accreditation, BSL-2 status, and related permits. Operate computers using software packages including but not limited to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, BioNumerics, and statistical and graphical packages. Assist graduate students with their research. Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment. Other duties as required.

Required Education and Experience:

PhD in microbiology or related field.

Required special knowledge abilities and skills:

Experience with molecular techniques including PCR and recombinant DNA procedures. Experience with microbiological techniques for isolating, culturing, and identifying microorganisms. Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment.  Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks as directed by the supervisor. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
