The Opportunity
The College of American Pathologists is uniquely positioned as the largest and most innovative global
provider of laboratory proficiency testing and accreditation. The CAP is seeking a new Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) to manage the daily operations of the CAP under the direction of a Board of Governors. In
partnership with the very engaged voluntary leadership of the CAP, the CEO will develop an effective
strategy for the organization that protects existing revenue and identities new opportunities for revenue
growth. The CEO will proactively address the implications of actions and trends that are likely to affect
the CAP. Through effective leadership and management, the CEO will foster high performance and
growth consistent with the respective missions, visions, strategic plans, and values of the organizations.
Key Responsibilities
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be responsible for the following:
- Promote a long-term strategy for the College of American Pathologists, in a partnership process
with the Board of Governors and Officers.
- The CEO must be able to communicate that strategy effectively to the staff, members,
and customers.
- Maintain effective avenues for open communication with the leadership.
- This includes identifying emerging issues and providing thoughtful analysis so that the
leadership can make sound decisions.
- Hire, motivate, develop, and retain CAP employees, a staff capable of meeting the membership
and business challenge.
- The CEO holds final authority to hire and terminate staff.
o Develop appropriate measures for staff accountability and productivity that maximizes
use of staff talents.
o Coordinate all staff activities and provide staff support for the CAP councils, and
committees.
o Foster a culture that advances inclusion, diversity, and equity among staff and
membership.
- Maintain a staff structure which works effectively with the volunteer leadership in advocating for
the pathology profession in the monitoring and development of public and federal government
policy, and which produces tangible results.
- Work with the Board and staff to develop plans to expand the program base, grow membership,
and develop programs that address emerging, non-traditional constituencies.
- Maintain financial stability for the CAP; develop a financial plan that supports a growth strategy.
- Supervise educational programs, convention planning and activities, dues collection, and
publication and advertising activities.
- Manage the business side of the operation.
- In cooperation with the Secretary-Treasurer and the Finance Committee, establish the
annual budget and ensure that the CAP operates within the approved budget.
- Ensure CAP funds and other property are properly administered and arranged for annual
audit.
- Coordinate and direct operations of all offices of the CAP, seeing to the provision of
security for all CAP documents and files.
- Execute contracts required in the ordinary course of business or authorized by the Board of
Governors.
- Formulate and recommend policies to further the objectives of the CAP.
- Implement policies established by the Board of Governors.
- Continually evaluate the organization and restructure as necessary to drive new levels of
excellence throughout the operation.
- Assure a staff and an organization structure that is best suited both to deliver the current
programs and to develop quality programs.
- Attend meetings of the Board of Governors, Executive Committee, committees of the Board of
Governors, and the House of Delegates, and inform them of all material factors concerning the
CAP’s operations and programs.
- Update the Board about current operations and short-term plans for the College of
American Pathologists.
- Inform the Board of new ideas, trends and issues that may affect longer-term thinking.
- Identify, evaluate, and prioritize opportunities for international growth. Determine appropriate
business strategy and assess resource requirements.
- Promote membership, participation in CAP activities, and good relationships with other public
and private organizations.
- Represent the CAP before such other organizations as directed by the Board of Governors.
- Manage relationships with outside groups, especially other medical and laboratory
groups.
- Interface with key staff of such groups.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
The ideal candidate for the CEO role will possess the following background, experience, and skills:
Governance and Leadership
- A minimum of 15 years of management experience, including successfully managing large,
complex organizations and senior level staff.
- Understanding of the key issues and competitive landscape in at least one of the following:
membership associations, proficiency testing, accreditation, health care, or laboratory
management.
- A record of collaboration with the Board of Directors in developing and communicating an
organizational strategic vision and in facilitating the strategic planning and governance
processes.
- Evidence of effective Board relationships and development. Success in working with boards to
resolve issues, develop consensus, and effect growth.
- Understanding of governance practices, trends, and legal considerations.
Administrative and Staff Management
- A record for building and leading a highly professional, knowledgeable, and diverse staff team in
a performance driven, dynamic, and results-oriented environment.
- A leadership style of identifying, developing, and engaging staff and fostering a culture of trust,
collaboration, and empowerment.
- Demonstrated skills in collaboration, diplomacy, oral and written communications, establishment
of clear goals and priorities, measuring results and rewarding successes.
- A high degree of emotional intelligence, humility, and effective communication and interpersonal
skills.
- Applies broad knowledge and seasoned experience to address complex issues, deal with
uncertainty, and make tough and timely decisions.
- A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Fiscal Management
- Managerial success demonstrated by measurable outcomes such as: revenue, cost savings,
quality improvements, customer retention and growth, and new product/program/service
introductions.
- Experience driving financial outcomes and indicators and communicating them to the Board of
Governors, leadership team, and external constituents.
- Demonstrated experience driving bottom-line operating results using technology capabilities and
infrastructure to create competitive advantage. Experience with and understanding how to
leverage data analytics, online commerce, and social media.
Strategy and Vision
- Experience defining, planning, and shaping strategies and initiatives that set direction for the
organization and/or business unit to meet member/customer needs.
- Experience in developing and successfully implementing complex long-range plans with multiple
interdependencies and variables.
External Relations
- Insight into practices and trends in the health care industry, preferable in laboratory medicine.
Knowledge should include a high-level understanding of key issues and trends in reimbursement,
regulatory requirements, and scientific advances.
- Evidence of developing and maintaining professional networks and relationships, particularly in
the health care and/or association field.
- Polished verbal communication skills, including interpersonal, presentation, writing and public
speaking skills. Ability to communicate complex professional and advocacy issues.
Education
A bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
