The engineering technician will operate, manage, and support engineering equipment. In this position, the technician will work with other technicians, engineers, students, and professors and be accountable to the Senior Lab Manager for the School of Engineering. The technician will support and maintain various test equipment and engineering systems associated with the School of Engineering labs including Civil, Mechanical, Industrial and Systems, and Electrical Engineering disciplines. The technician will use best safety practices and industry standards to meet the needs of the school’s educational and research activities. The technician will also document changes to procedures, set up and perform experimental procedures as needed, and provide experimental results for colleagues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Engineering Technician reports directly to the Senior Lab Manager and performs a variety of tasks, including:

  • Operate, manage and support engineering systems
  • Collaborate with students, professors and fellow engineers to determine the best

practices for performing a new test method

  • Inspect equipment for safety, and quality control
  • Recommend replacements of older systems/equipment for improved cost

reductions, safety, and quality control

  • Diagnose and repair broken equipment or engage third parties to perform service

and repairs

  • Review testing plans with stakeholders
  • Perform experimental tests, collect data, report results to remote stakeholders
  • Work with engineers and professors to make recommendations on new

equipment/system directions

  • Train students, engineers, and professors on the best practices on the operation of

the test equipment and systems

  • Be responsible for all required qualification tests on projects and ensure compliance

with all parties involved

  • Participate in research meetings with external stakeholders
  • Manage lab chemicals to DOT/EPA regulations

Give tours to visitors from time to time in order to recruit new students and new

funding opportunities from industry, government entities, and national labs.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A technical school degree and/or certification for a technician or relevant work experience is required, or the candidate can be a newly-graduated engineer.
  • Successful candidates will possess the abilities to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently, to analyze problems and strategize for better solutions, and to take initiative to recommend projects, system improvements, and/or cost reductions.
  • They will also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong mathematical and technical skills, and proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suites (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel).
  • Training manuals and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manuals need to be developed for the equipment and will be the responsibility of this technician.
  • A successful candidate will give strict attention to detail, be flexible and able to multitask on several different aspects of a project or on multiple projects, and be an excellent communicator who is able to understand instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Finally, the successful candidate must be team focused, and possess a Christ-like attitude.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering or a related field is preferred. Preference will also be given to a candidate who is a creative problem solver who thrives when presented with a challenge and possesses an in-depth understanding of engineering testing equipment and systems or in-depth understanding of materials processing and testing, and relevant industry practices. Knowledge of local, state, and federal property and safety regulations is also a plus.

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • Occasionally required to travel to campus locations.
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard. Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled office/classroom/lab setting. It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.

Driving Requirements

Occasionally required to travel to campus locations.
