Job Description

PURPOSE

  • The Post Doctoral Researcher, under general supervision, performs skilled, technical support research involving the performance of assignment, requiring modification and adaptation to routine procedures. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on the successful completion of tasks assigned.
  • Lead the investigation of stress reponses of scleractinian corals using respirometry techniques.
  • The Post Doctoral Researcher will conduct acute exposure experiments, process coral biological responses, and analyze and present results in quarterly reports.

DESCRIPTION

  • Conduct, maintain, and lead controlled experiments.
  • Collect samples and measurement data from the experiments. Implement and maintain data collection and summarize the experimental trials.
  • Extract, collect, and compile data and present results in quarterly reports
  • Assist in maintenance in aquarium life support system.
  • Assist with equipment and protocol troubleshooting
  • Prepare grants for numerous funding agencies.
  • Prepare scientific summary papers and write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed national/international journals.
  • Communicate research findings with funding agencies.
  • Assist graduate students with their thesis and dissertation projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Acquire experience to promote professional development of themselves and others

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology, Marine Science or related field.
  • Experience conducting environmental experimentation in marine organisms.
  • Strong knowledge of experimental design and statistical analyses and demonstrated scientific writing skills.
  • Excellent professional, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills and ability to work on an interdisciplinary research team
  • Adept at multi-tasking and cooperative teamwork.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One-two (1-2) years of experience in writing, preparing, and submitting grants.
  • In-depth knowledge of respirometry, sediment and turbidity manipulations, and coral biology, physiology, and ecology.
  • Strong track record of published research in reputable national and international journals.
  • Current SCUBA certification with AAUS Scientific Diver and Nitrox status.
  • Skilled in statistical and GIS software like R, SAS, and ArcMap
  • Flexibility to work beyond standard hours and on weekends when needed.
