Resources for the Future (RFF) is an independent, nonprofit research institution in Washington, DC. Our mission is to improve environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement. We are seeking a Director for Foundation Relations to build, shape, grow and meet year over year foundation giving goals for Resources for the Future.


  • Support the President and CEO, Vice President for Development, and research leadership in all aspects of foundation relations and (non-government) grants management.

  • Work with Vice President for Development and Vice President for Finance & Administration to set and meet ambitious foundation giving goals on an annual basis. Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-year plan and strategies to increase the amount and quality and durable of funding from foundations.

  • Develop, cultivate, and maintain effective relationships with new and existing foundation partners and their representatives, including program officers, board members, and other influencers and decision-makers.

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit an active portfolio of 75-100 high value institutional donors and prospects. Cultivate and maintain awareness of grantmaking budget cycles, philanthropic trends and opportunities. Develop, prepare, and present formal proposals.

  • Manage and liaise with a variety of research and administrative staff members involved in grant writing, reporting, and management to ensure high performance of this portfolio.

  • Work collaboratively with the research team to gain a thorough understanding of RFF's work; build strong working relationships with program leaders.

  • Ensure effective stewardship of foundation prospects and donors. Collaborate with other development and program staff on cultivating and soliciting multi-stakeholder and multi-interest prospects.

  • Educate internal constituencies regarding funding trends and opportunities.

  • Use and model use of the Blackbaud NXT database to document moves, access data, and develop accurate relationship status and financial projections.

  • Support the Vice President for Development in creating and executing on RFF's annual, campaign, and multi-year development strategy.

  • Assist the Vice President for Development in setting prospect research priorities; make effective use of prospect research.

  • Coordinate effectively with the Development Operations Team and the Finance & Administration department for accurate and timely grant recording, monitoring and reporting.

  • 8+ years in highly responsible development positions, including 3+ years in a leadership role in foundations relations and fundraising, ideally at a college, university, or other research institution.

  • Demonstrated success raising 6-7+ figure gifts and grants from foundations

  • Outstanding communications and impeccable writing skills, strong internal customer service skills. Able to quickly learn and translate technical information into accessible and compelling written and oral communications.

  • Willingness to build strategies and manage up as appropriate for the donor/prospect.

  • Thrives in a high-performing, fast-paced environment with multiple projects and priorities occurring simultaneously.

  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities while meeting tight deadlines.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity, ability to change course quickly based on new insights.

  • Flawless attention to detail.

  • High degree of initiative and the ability to work with autonomy in a team setting.

  • Highly credible representative of RFFs value and work and able to serve as an organizational change agent in the development of our internal culture of philanthropy;

  • Able to build and manage a portfolio autonomously, and work as a member of team.
