Position Summary | The Department of Data Science at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position that will begin September 25, 2023. We seek an individual with expertise in experimental medium energy nuclear physics and data science, machine learning. The selected candidate will collaborate on developing and implementing an AI/ML-based approach for online experimental control. The initial appointment is funded for two years, and appointment may be extended pending funding and performance. Our group engages in a multitude of activities, which include the continuous real-time tuning of the orientation of the Hall D diamond radiator for continuous tuning of the photon beam in GlueX/JLab, AI/ML for processing and analyzing streaming data, the design optimization of large-scale detectors and pioneering materials. The Data Science Program is also deeply involved in educational activities that help disseminating AI/ML, and we actively collaborate with the EIC community and with AI4EIC (https://eic.ai ). William & Mary has hosted the 2022 AI4EIC workshop and contributed to organize the first AI4EIC hackathon. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate in these educational activities. |
Required Qualifications | A PhD is required at the time the appointment begins. Knowledge of C++/Python is also required |
Preferred Qualifications | Experience with Reinforcement Learning and/or Deep Learning and/or Uncertainty Quantification and/or EPICS (or similar Control Systems) |
