Postdoctoral Appointee – Atomic Layer Deposition for Water Treatment

Argonne

Job Description

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Functional Coatings Group in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory to conduct advanced research in thin film coatings.

The successful applicant will play a pivotal role in advancing our research project applying thin film coating technology to develop improved membranes and sorbents for water treatment.  In particular, the new hire will use atomic layer deposition (ALD) and sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) to tailor the physical and chemical properties of polymer membranes and sorbents to improve the selectivity, efficiency, and anti-fouling capabilities of materials used in desalination and other water treatment functions.  A key task in this project will be to construct an atmospheric pressure roll-to-roll coating system to perform spatial ALD and SIS on polymer membranes.  An understanding of membrane technology for water treatment is required. The postdoctoral appointee will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and multi-institutional team as part of the Collaborative Water-Energy Research Center (CoWERC).  The postdoctoral appointee is expected to aid in the design, analysis, and interpretation of experiments as well as present findings to the community through publications and presentations.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, or materials science with 0 to 2 years of experience, or the equivalent experience through practical application in a laboratory.

  • Knowledge of and experience with membrane science and technology for water treatment including ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes, and membrane synthesis, characterization, and testing.

  • Knowledge of and experience with atomic layer deposition methods and equipment.

  • Skilled in working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Record of publication and external recognition in these areas.

  • Ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
