Physicist Research Scientist

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP ) Division has an opening for a Physicist Research Scientist to join the team as a key member of a team consisting of physicists, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, software engineers and students. 


In this role, you will develop, analyze and implement advanced computational methods for the modeling of particle accelerator, beam (particles and laser) and plasma physics on desktop workstations to supercomputers. You will work collaboratively with ATAP scientists, software engineers, postdoctoral scholars and students, document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed journals, oral presentations, and participate in meetings, conferences and reviews.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Develop state-of-the-art algorithms and codes for the modeling of plasma devices, particle accelerators and beams (particles and laser).

  • Perform numerical analysis of the algorithm properties such as accuracy, stability, scalability.

  • Participate in multi-laboratory collaboration on the development of the BLAST (Beam, pLasma & Accelerator Simulation Toolkit) suite of codes that includes the 3D Particle-In-Cell (PIC) codes WarpX (developed within the US DOE Exascale Computing Project), HiPACE++ and ImpactX.

  • Work closely with scientists, postdocs, and graduate students.

  • Document and communicate results of work in peer-reviewed-journal publications and in oral presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, and reviews.

  • May supervise postdocs and students. 

  • Interacts with work groups and professional colleagues outside the Laboratory. May assist in preparing funding proposals.

  • Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices.

 

What is Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience beyond Ph.D. or equivalent in Applied Mathematics or related field.

  • Demonstrated experience in numerical analysis of accuracy and stability of numerical algorithms.

  • Experience with the development of Particle-In-Cell methods.

  • Experience in computational plasma physics and computational electromagnetics.

  • Knowledge in the development of numerical methods, GPU programming,  

  • Knowledge in modern C++ and python for scientific computing and parallel, High-Performance Computing (MPI, OpenMP).

 

Salary:  

The full salary range of this position is between $8,498 to $20,397 month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $11,331 to $15,864 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.  It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
