Departmental Overview
The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) is the nexus for campus-wide multidisciplinary neuroscience research at UC Berkeley. Our community includes over 70 faculty members in 12 academic departments. This unique cross-departmental structure brings together experts from a variety of fields to use the power of interdisciplinary research to achieve breakthroughs in the study of the brain and nervous system, and to drive the development of novel treatments and technologies.
We support our faculty and their labs in their individual research aims, and foster opportunities for collaboration. We also sponsor major research initiatives, run five innovative neurotechnology and research centers, and train the next generation of neuroscientists through our Neuroscience PhD Program and the training of postdoctoral fellows who conduct research in HWNI faculty labs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage mouse colony consisting of multiple transgenic mouse lines; perform tissue collection, genotyping, record keeping and coordinate with postdocs and graduate students to determine research animal needs.
  • Perform various scientific duties that support ongoing projects in the Fisher lab including: breeding flies for experiments, assisting with running behavioral experiments, and analyzing neuronal anatomy labeled by transgenic driver lines.
  • Perform histological staining procedures to assist with ongoing experiments in the Feldman lab, this includes preparing and sectioning brain tissue, performing immunohistochemistry and related methods, and training lab members on these methods.
  • Coordinate purchasing of supplies and equipment, reimbursements, and other administrative tasks.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and operation of both labs.
  • Compile financial reports to track spending, as needed.
  • Act as lab safety coordinator for both labs and ACUC liaison for Feldman lab
  • Provide direction to 1-3 undergraduate research interns in both labs
  • Manage Drosophila stock collection consisting of a couple of hundred transgenic fly lines; including flipping the fly collection onto fresh food biweekly, old vial disposal, cooking specialty fly food, and record keeping.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Excel, Google Sheets, or other databases; ability to learn other computer programs.
  • Highly responsible, organized, good record keeping, strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well in teams with postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates; to train others; and to manage undergraduate researchers.
  • Ability to work with mice (handling, colony management).
  • Able to meet University guidelines for animal use and lab safety.
  • Knowledge of genetics.
  • Experience with histology and immunostaining.

Education/Training:
  • B.S., B.A., preferably in neuroscience, biology, or psychology, and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $58,490.82 (step 1.0) - $94,091.99 (step 25.0).
  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
