Clinical Tenure Track Translational Investigator Position

The Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is recruiting a clinical tenure-track scientist/investigator who will establish an independent translational research program integrating both basic and clinical research. We are seeking an outstanding physician scientist who will apply innovative and rigorous approaches to the understanding of a disease process within the scope of the NICHD mission.  Successful candidate’s research interests may include, but are not restricted to, endocrinology, clinical genetics, genomics, biochemical genetics and metabolism, neurogenetics, neurodevelopment, development of therapies for rare pediatric diseases or research related to women’s health. The candidate’s clinical and basic science/translational research plans should be aligned with the NICHD strategic plan (https://www.nichd.nih.gov/about/org/strategicplan ). Research alignment with basic science currently conducted in the NICHD IRP is desired, but newly evolving research fields are welcome. Basic science strengths in the NICHD IRP include developmental biology, cell and structural biology, genomics and gene regulation, and neurosciences (https://www.nichd.nih.gov/about/org/dir ) . 

The NICHD IRP offers many unique opportunities for investigators:

• Research programs are fully supported by NICHD IRP. Support includes the investigator’s salary, start-up funding, laboratory space, funded positions for staff and trainees, and a research budget commensurate with the proposed research program and sufficient to foster success. Tenure-track investigators have access to state-of-the-art NICHD core facilities.
• Salary will be commensurate with professional experience and accomplishments. A full civil-service benefits package (including health (medical, dental, vision), life and long-term care insurance; retirement; Thrift Savings Plan) is available.
• Clinical research, including clinical support personnel, is supported by the NICHD Office of the Clinical Director with access to the NIH Hatfield Clinical Research Center’s facilities for human investigation (http://clinicalcenter.nih.gov/ ).
• General clinical or teaching opportunities are available, but are not required.
• Researchers join the NIH Bethesda, MD campus of 27 institutes and centers with over 1,100 principal investigators (including 220 junior tenure-track investigators) and over 4,000 trainees, providing excellent opportunities for collaboration and access to the world-class core facilities of the NIH community.

Qualifications/eligibility:  Applicants must have an M.D. degree (or equivalent), be board-eligible or board-certified, and qualify for credentialing by the NIH Clinical Center.  The investigator’s ability to carry out creative, independent work is essential. At least two years of basic laboratory experience is preferred. Strong preference will be given to individuals with doctoral or postdoctoral laboratory research experience. Applicants should have an established track record of accomplishments with high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals.
