Program Coordinator, Virginia Center for Civil War Studies

Virginia Tech

Job Description

The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, housed in Virginia Tech’s History Department, promotes deeper understanding of Civil War era history among varied constituencies: professional historians, students, K-12 teachers, and the general public. We’re searching for a part-time, academic-year program coordinator to assist the center director in implementing center events and programs.

The center sponsors a wide variety of events, ranging from an annual Civil War Weekend for the general public to academic conferences to visiting speakers. We sponsor internships and scholarships for Virginia Tech students; a postdoctoral fellowship for recent PhDs; and grants for researchers to visit Virginia Tech. Public outreach projects include the Civil War Film Series at a local cinema; the Civil War Driving Tour of Southwest Virginia; and the Traveling Trunk program for fourth-graders.

More information about the center’s activities is available at our website (www.civilwar.vt.edu).

This is a part-time hourly position during the academic year (early August through early May). Much of the work can be performed remotely and the specific hours worked will be negotiable, although you will need to be available for in-person center events, which typically take place evenings or weekends. The number of hours worked each week will vary, with an average of 15-18 hours per week.

Representative duties
• Assist director with in-person and virtual event planning and management, including publicity, logistics, corresponding with speakers, managing webinars and Youtube channel, organizing speaker travel
• Maintain center website and social media channels
• Coordinate Traveling Trunk elementary school outreach program: schedule class visits; oversee training of student presenters; option to participate in delivery of the program, depending on your background in Civil War era history
• Liaise with history department staff regarding payment of honoraria and invoices, grant budgets, and other fiscal matters
• Provide administrative support for VCCWS research grants, student internship grants, and various research/outreach projects
