General Notes

This is an in person position at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin. This position is initially for 1 year from date of hire, but is renewable for up to 3 years total.

Purpose

As part of a multi-disciplinary integrated research team investigating US tight oil / shale gas plays, the candidate will contribute to and advance TORA’s geo-cellular modeling efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, modify, and refine basin-scale 3D geo-cellular models of unconventional hydrocarbon resources. This will require working closely with the senior geologic modeler to understand the current state of models in different basins and current modeling workflows.
  • Identify data types needed for further model improvements and work with other team members to ensure data is available in a timely manner. Identify and implement new and improved workflows related to geo-cellular model construction, possibly incorporating mechanical stratigraphy or advanced geostatistical methods.
  • Contribute to data analytics efforts to understand well productivity and the impact of model results on productivity.
  • Interaction with sponsors and potential sponsors, collaborating with team members on program development.

  • Document and present research in oral and poster formats to sponsors, in publications, and at regional and national meetings. Perform internal and professional society service.


Required Qualifications

Geoscience PhD. Experience with fracture modeling and impact of diagenesis on fracture development. Significant experience with and/or advanced degree in statistics. Some experience with creating geologic models within Petrel. Ability to code in Python and R.

PhD must have been received within 3 years of date of hire.


Preferred Qualifications

As above plus some petroleum industry experience (internships acceptable) and familiarity with unconventional reservoirs. Experience with reservoir characterization and thermal modeling of basins.


Salary Range

$65,000+ depending on qualifications.


Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Occasional weekend, overtime, and evening work to meet deadlines.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
