Imaging Adaptive Interfacial Assemblies Postdoctoral Fellow

Job Description

The Materials Science (MSD ) Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) is seeking a Imaging Adaptive Interfacial Assemblies Postdoc to investigate the assembly and function of adaptive nanoparticle films at the liquid-liquid interface. In this role, you will be a part of a collaborative team of chemists and materials scientists funded by the Department of Energy in the Adaptive Interfacial Assemblies towards Structuring Liquids core program.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform world-class research in the design, fabrication, and characterization of nanoparticle surfactant films at the liquid-liquid interface which control the flow of energy and matter.

  • Conduct in-situ imaging and characterization of the assembly dynamics of nanoparticle surfactant (NPS) films at the nanoscale under applied field.

  • Investigate the assembly and relaxation of dense (NPS) films at the liquid-liquid interface.

  • Measure and model early adsorption kinetics with single nanoparticle granularity.

  • Elucidate the mechanism of spontaneous emulsification of NPS films comprising magnetic particles in rapidly changing magnetic fields.

  • Utilize super resolution optical microscopy and high-speed AFM for data collection and analysis.

  • Prepare scientific data for publication in refereed journals and present findings at seminars and conferences.

  • Collaborate with team members and lead junior members to achieve project aims and publish scientific progress.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Develop safety protocols and standard operating procedures.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Physics, or related field focusing on the physical understanding of intermolecular interactions and self-assembly.

  • Experience working with imaging and characterization tools such as SEM, TEM, AFM, confocal and super resolution optical microscopy, and Rheometers.

  • Demonstrated ability to approach research imaginatively yet rigorously.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Excellent interdisciplinary communication skills as evidenced by a strong publication record, conference presentations, and participation in collaborative projects.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment.

Desired Qualifications:
