Under the supervision of the Director of Online Learning Services, this position provides instructional design and instructional technology services and support to CEI faculty and staff with the development of courses by utilizing the college’s Learning Management System (LMS).

This position will work closely with instructors teaching in all delivery formats (face-to-face, hybrid and fully online) to implement effective digital learning strategies, online best practices, and a broad range of educational technology tools. This includes providing high-level customer support for instructional design planning and implementation of the college’s LMS to enhance instruction.

The instructional designer will assist faculty in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the online and hybrid courses currently offered. This position will also assist in the creation of processes for quality assurance and for continuous improvement of course delivery for the college. All duties will be performed in accordance with the CEI policies and procedures, all US state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Work closely with faculty and department chairs/managers to refine existing and new courses to ensure the best hybrid and/or fully online instruction that reflects documented best practices and meets student learning objectives.

  • Apply theory and best practices to develop guiding principles for a quality design of courses that support learning and the performance of diverse learners.

  • Plan and coordinate the development of online course components, including media resources, learning activities, and active learning objects.

  • Consult with college chairs/division managers to assist the college departments in the process by which "Course Templates" are designed and developed.

  • Create and provide faculty training on new instructional initiatives and provide implementation of these technologies within the Blackboard platform.

  • Teach an introduction to online teaching for new and first time online faculty.

  • Assist faculty in conducting formative and summative evaluation of the program's courses.

  • Design, develop and deliver professional development offerings for faculty, staff, and students on the use of academic technology tools and systems as well as pedagogy underlying effective and engaging online instruction.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the online and hybrid course designs and refine the process for continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Learning Technologies, Learning Sciences, Distance Education, or a related field, OR a minimum of 6 years of professional higher education instructional design experience plus a Bachelor’s Degree in the related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two years professional experience designing instructional materials and online instruction, preferably in, but not limited to, a higher education environment

  • Using instructional technologies such as course management systems, rich media, online testing, lecture capture, video conferencing, and web tools

  • Assisting faculty in education with instructional design or instructional technology

  • Assisting educators with digital accessibility or universal design principles

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge, understanding, and application of instructional design theory, instructional design principles, learning theory, and instructional technology

  • Strong background in curriculum development, quality instructional design concepts and principles, needs assessment and distance learning best practices

  • Ability to coordinate LMS troubleshooting and problem-solving in a highly technical and fast-paced environment that is focused on providing service to the CEI community

  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral presentation communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, positive customer service record, and the ability to train and consult effectively with faculty in higher education with a broad range of skills and experience with instructional technologies

Additional Desired Qualifications:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctorate degree in Instructional Design or related fields

  • Two or more years of professional higher education experience, preferably community college online course experience

  • Higher education teaching experience

  • Demonstrated creativity, skill, and experience in designing instruction that engages students and provides active learning experiences

  • Experience with Blackboard Learn

  • Teaching experience in higher education

  • Quality Matters certifications or experience

  • Experience with image and audio-editing software
