    Position overview
    Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay based on prior months of postdoc service (both domestic and international) before the start of appointment. See Table 23 and 23N (Hourly) for experience level minimums. A reasonable estimated full-time rate for this position at 100% time is $60,000- $71,952. Salaries that are higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated experience level minimum, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
    Percent time: 100% time
    Anticipated start: August 15, 2023 or later
    Position duration: Initial appointment is for a 2 year duration.

    Position description

    The Surface Processes Group at UC Santa Barbara is looking to hire a postdoctoral scientist to join their team. The successful candidate will work on the global analysis of satellite imagery to characterize river mobility and understand how river mobility will respond to climate change and human interference. The successful candidate will develop and apply new/existing methods to extract binary maps of river water from satellite imagery (including NASA Landsat, ESA Sentinel, Planet Imagery), and apply the new analysis tools developed by our group (e.g., extracting bank-migration vector fields using particle image velocimetry) to characterize river migration patterns across the world. The successful candidate will also engage in outreach activities by developing short courses for high school and undergraduate students, and provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students within the team.

    The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.


    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD program (or equivalent) except the dissertation in Earth Sciences or related field at time of application


    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

    PhD in Earth Sciences or related field at time of employment.

    The search committee will focus only on applicants that have cited a graduation/Ph.D. conferral date of "August 1, 2023 or within 2 months of anticipated start date.


    Preferred qualifications
    • Proficient in coding, machine learning
    • Prior experience with remote sensing
    • strong publication record
    • enthusiasm and interest in remote sensing methods and application to river evolution
    • strong background in sediment transport mechanics and geomorphology (as per the Cover Letter content),
