Through 8/31/24, with the possibility of continuation depending on business needs, performance, and the availability of funding.


Purpose

The research associate will carry out research related to high-redshift galaxy evolution, including the development of tools for data reduction and analysis


Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in Astronomy according to specific area of interest.
  • To publish research findings and present them in scientific meetings. Domestic and international travel may be required.
  • Collaborate with other researchers on projects.
  • Provide guidance/assistance on related projects to other members of the research team.
  • Other related functions as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Astronomy or a related field
  • Demonstrated expertise with astronomical data and data reduction procedures, specifically for JWST data.
  • Extensive knowledge of imaging and spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies, including data reduction, photometric and spectroscopic extraction, and high-level analysis.
  • Research experience in high-redshift galaxy evolution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Attention to detail, effective problem-solving skills, and excellent judgment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous research experience in any of the following areas: space-based data acquisition and reduction, galaxy evolution research specifically measurement of luminosity functions and spectroscopic redshifts
  • Four years postdoctoral experience in the field of high-redshift galaxy evolution.
  • Significant experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students


Salary Range

$76,500




Working Conditions

  • Work in an academic research environment.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Occasional overnight observations may be scheduled according to project needs.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
