Job Description

The Montgomery College, Takoma Park-Silver Spring, is currently accepting applications for possible openings as a part-time faculty member teaching coursework within the Department of Psychology.  We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.   This position is eligible for telework up to 2 days per week after successful completion of initial employment probationary period.

  • The hiring decision for part-time faculty involves an academic judgment and shall be determined at Management’s sole discretion.
  • During the academic year part-time faculty at Montgomery College may teach no more than 11.5 ESH (equivalent semester hour) per semester and no more than 23 ESH per academic year.
  • During summer part-time faculty at Montgomery College may teach no more than 10 ESH (equivalent semester hour) for both sessions combined.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned courses in psychology.
  • Knowledgeable about undergraduate psychology learning objectives and course content.
  • Teach a variety of psychology courses on schedules that may include daytime, evening, weekend, and accelerated sections, on all campuses if needed.  Opportunities may exist to teach summer and winter session classes. Follow guidelines from department chairs to ensure consistent content coverage and student experience across multiple sections of a course.
  • Administer, grade, and provide feedback in a timely manner to monitor student mastery and progress through a course.
  • Meet established deadlines to submit student mid-term and ?nal course grades.
  • Conduct assigned classes in the area of employment in accordance with the catalog description, the course syllabi, and the stipulations of the College.
  • Readily accessible to students for academic consultation and advising through one-on-one or group meetings, telephone, videoconferencing, and email.
  • Respond to student questions and requests within two days of receipt.
  • Participate, when possible, in departmental, unit, and campus meetings of a professional nature.
  • Hold every scheduled class, including the ?nal examination, the full scheduled number of minutes during the scheduled time in the scheduled location.
  • Maintain standards of teaching consistent with the standards of the department and the College.
  •  Contribute to curriculum improvement and revision.
  • Demonstrate respect for all individuals and welcome diversity among students and colleagues. 
  • Facilitate, encourage, and participate in meaningful online pedagogical discussions. 
  • Remain knowledgeable in the current literature, and research teaching practices in the field.
  • Participate in professional societies, service meetings, and professional development workshops at Montgomery College and external opportunities as a means of improving instruction.
  • Adjust, insofar as possible, teaching methods to student needs.
  • They must also submit to the appropriate administrator or department chair, determined by the individual academic department, a copy of the syllabus, and other materials (e.g., reading lists or assignment sheets, copy of the ?nal examination), and a copy of the final grade book.
  • Read and respond promptly to College emails and pick up mail from the assigned mailbox before each scheduled class day.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Psychology.
  • Teaching experience (e.g., instructor of record, teaching assistant, lab assistant).
  • Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the Colleges strategic plan of inclusion.
  • Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus)*.  Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools.  *If you do not have access to a personal computer, please notify the department chair at the time of interview. Subject to available funds, the college may be able to provide temporary access to resources.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without a sponsor.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Psychology. 
  • Availability to teach in-person, on-campus courses during standard business hours
  • Experience teaching psychology courses at the college level for a minimum of 2 semesters.
  • Experience teaching using Blackboard LMS.
