Position description
We seek an experienced scientist to advance our research at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Neurology in the laboratory of Dr. Portera-Cailliau.
Dr. Portera-Cailliau’s laboratory investigates differences in cortical circuit function that could account for sensory hypersensitivity in the Fmr1 knockout mouse model of Fragile X syndrome (FXS). Our research focuses on identifying circuit mechanisms of disease (especially as they relate to inhibitory interneurons) that could be targeted for control of symptoms in preclinical studies in mice. We use in vivo 2-photon calcium imaging in awake mice to record from neurons in sensory cortices and compare network activity patterns between Fmr1 knockout mice and wild type control mice. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising graduate students and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals. The salary range for this position is $71,500 to $82,900.
Specific Responsibilities
Responsibilities of this position include study design, data acquisition, statistical computation, and manuscript/grant preparation. This includes ability to work with the Principal Investigator (PI) to design experiments and work closely with the PI and students to complete the multidisciplinary tasks described in the grants that find these studies. The candidate is expected to assist in grant preparation/submission by the end of the first year. The candidate will also assist in ordering supplies and reagents for the lab, conduct safety and/or DLAM inspections, and
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD and have completed a 5-year postdoctoral fellowship. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in the following areas: FXS/autism, brain development, cortical circuits, inhibitory interneurons, and data analysis.
Applicants must have experience with rodent surgeries (e.g., cranial window implantation, stereotaxic viral injections), in vivo 2-photon calcium imaging, MATLAB programming, and sophisticated statistical analyses. Excellent verbal and written English skills. Skills in reading and analyzing scientific journals to maintain detailed laboratory techniques and research protocols. Skills in brain tissue processing for histological reconstructions and/or immunohistochemical staining. Prior experience with mouse models of autism is preferred.
Additional Duties
• Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively.
• Ability to work independently on scientific projects.
• Required to communicate well with other scientists.
• 5 years research experience in neuroscience in an academic setting or equivalent.
• Completion of all required UCLA training
• Compliance with biohazard and chemical disposal protocols
• The candidate will report directly to the PI and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.
