The University of California, Los Angeles invites applicants and nominations for an internationally recognized neuroscientist to join the faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) as Chair of the Department of Neurobiology. The Chair is an endowed position with exceptional support and resources from the DGSOM for the recruitment of tenure-track faculty, management and renovation of space, and building innovative new research and educational programs in neurobiology that further enhance the department, in collaboration with other highly interactive components of UCLA. The existing administrative team in the department includes fund managers, purchasing agents, student affairs officer, administrative assistant to the Chair, development liaison, human resources analyst, and a chief administrative officer all working under the Chair with a common goal to optimize the work environment and academic productivity for the faculty. 

The Chair is responsible for advancing the Department’s mission of excellence in education, service and research through the development of educational programs, research and innovation, financial management, staffing, performance growth, faculty recruitment and retention, and the strengthening of community partnerships. The Chair will continue the tradition of cultivating a scientifically rigorous as well as highly collegial, inclusive, and multidisciplinary environment consistent with the principles of the DGSOM’s Cultural North Star. The Chair reports to the Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine and the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.

The Department of Neurobiology is recognized as a premier fundamental research department and a leading force in neuroscience discovery and education at UCLA and worldwide. The department encompasses diverse backgrounds in cellular and molecular biology, genetics, behavioral research, and engineering. Research in the department focuses on systems and molecular/cellular neuroscience, computational and circuit/network analyses, neuropharmacology, neuroendocrinology, and development to enhance the understanding of the nervous system and its role in health and disease. The department participates in collaborative efforts across UCLA, which has one of the largest and most diverse neuroscience communities in the nation, comprised of the Brain Research Institute, the Neuroscience Research Theme, the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research, the UCLA Intellectual Development and Disabilities Research Center, the Semel Institute, the Brain Mapping Center, the California NanoSystems Institute, and the Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biosciences. Collaborative neuroscience opportunities exist in other departments across campus, including Neurobiology, Physiology, Biological Chemistry, Human Genetics, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, and Neurosurgery, Integrative Biology & Physiology, Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology, Computational and Systems Biology, and Psychology, as well as departments within the
schools of Physical Sciences and Engineering.


The ideal candidate is a distinguished neuroscientist with an outstanding record of accomplishments in research, education and service, and an aptitude for collaboration and leadership. The successful candidate will combine their academic acumen with excellent communication skills, an inspiring strategic vision, longstanding dedication to mentorship and the development of scientists, and a commitment to fostering an equitable environment that is inclusive and respectful of diversity. All candidates must hold an advanced degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) and appropriate academic credentials for a tenured faculty appointment at UCLA.

The posted UC salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/index.html) set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5 – Faculty HSCP. ( https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2023-24/oct-2023-acad-salary-scales/t5-summary.pdf ) The salary range for this position is $305,000-$420,000. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/apm/apm-670.pdfwhich ), which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
