It is the academic mission of the George Washington School of Business (GWSB) to be a preeminent business school designed to prepare our students to become ethical world business leaders. GWSB is searching for a Senior Academic Department Manager. This role serves as the first point of contact as the key administrative support for the department, as well any of department-related centers or institutes, various offices at the school level, interacts daily with GW faculty, staff and students, and work closely with the Dean’s office on departmental affairs involving teaching, research, and other operations. The Senior Academic Department Manager reports to the Department Chairs of the Department of Decision Sciences (DNSC) and International Business (IBUS). This position will work closely with the Dean’s office (for up to 20%, as needed, of the time assigned/allocated to the Dean’s office). This position may supervise an office assistant and/or temporary staff and student workers.

This role is a key contributor to providing high quality customer service to meet the academic needs of the faculty and students. Faculty support includes acquiring textbooks and compiling course materials, etc. The primary focus for this position is managing and executing activities related to academic program financial operations, faculty and staff personnel actions and logistics for classrooms and curriculum assignments. The Senior Academic Department Manager will oversee the general maintenance of the office, coordinate department events and may maintain the department website. This role exercises authority to make decisions related to academic support and is recognized as the lead administrative resource for the department. This individual has financial responsibility to prepare annual budget proposals for review by the Department Chairs, to reconcile monthly budget, to prepare budget reports and to process all financial transactions (stipends, requisitions, P card expense reports). In addition, this role manages the hiring process for all faculty (full time, adjunct and visiting scholars) and temporary staff and students, including on-boarding to the department. This role exercises authority to make decisions related to academic support and serves as the administrative subject matter expert for the department. This position participates in regular school-wide meetings for administrative managers. This individual will also be called upon to provide support to other administrative department administrators, when the situation warrants this (examples would be absences due to vacations, illnesses, vacancies, etc.)
This position performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Highly detailed with strong organizational skills, self-motivated, possess solid computer skills and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Banner, EAS and I-Buy systems.
  • Enjoys working as part of a team as well as independently to achieve department and GWSB goals and objectives.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse university population at all levels, facilitate decision making and conflict resolution, maintain a positive and constructive demeanor treating all staff, students, faculty with professionalism, courtesy and respect.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Prior administrative experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills are a must for success in this position.
