Job Description


The newly established Center for Disease Mechanics at Virginia Tech is seeking a research assistant professor to develop, coordinate, and manage the centers’ collaborative project. This position provides an excellent opportunity to work in a world-class interdisciplinary environment as part of a team of experimental and computational scientists from engineering and biology in close collaboration with clinicians. The position entails interacting with faculty across multiple departments to conceive research projects and develop grant proposals, coordinating and managing collaborative interdisciplinary research projects, conducting original research, contributing to student mentorship, facilitating large-scale research proposal development, and actively liaising with funding agencies.

The position is available starting as soon as possible and is eligible for annual renewal contingent upon satisfactory progress and continued funding.


Required Qualifications

• A Ph.D. degree in biology, engineering, biophysics, or a closely related discipline.
• Proven track record of outstanding research that is reflected in publications and secured funding (e.g., postdoctoral fellowship or other early-career grants). Credentials consistent for appointment to rank of assistant professor are expected.
• Significant project management and problem solving experience.
• Proficient in Biosafety Level-2 (BSL-2) laboratory environment, proficiency in standard cell- and molecular-biological techniques, and advanced optical microscopy.
• Strong communication skills and enthusiasm to engage with an interdisciplinary research team to conceive research projects and develop grant proposals.
• Strong leadership skills and proven track record of student mentoring.


Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience in bacteriology and in vivo experimental studies.
